NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The new exhibit, “The Lucayans: The Valor of the Vanquished” opened Wednesday morning at the Pompey Museum on Bay Street, placing a spotlight on remembering our nations indigenous population and culture.

The poignant opening ceremony for the new exhibit, ” The Lucayans: The Valor of the Vanquished ” featured tributes like a symbolic conch horn blowing, and a dedication written and presented by Patricia Glinton-Meicholas.

There were also remarks from Prime Minister Philip Davis, who focused on remembering those that came before us.

It was 530 years ago today, when the Lucayans and Christopher Columbus’ expedition made contact for the first time. A meeting that would have dire consequences for the native islanders.

But Columbus is one aspect that Nameiko Miller, the curator of the exhibit, says they didn’t want to focus on.
