NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The newest senator to join the upper chamber is speaking exclusively to Our News about her appointment and plans for the future.

“We have to mentor more women to come forward we can’t just pick up and say election coming up let’s find some women; it takes us a little bit longer in terms of we have to overcome our personal issues or obstacles”

This was Senator D’asante Small talking to our Sasha Lightbourne just over a year ago for a series called Breaking The Glass Ceiling Or Not? The series took a look at women in politics and more specifically at Kamala Harris, who was running against Donald Trump at the time in the U.S. Presidential election.

Fastforward to today, Small is now a senator. She was appointed following the resignation of Darron Pickstock, who was elected as the member of parliament for Golden Isles back during the November 24th by-election.

“I think a lot of times you hope for something or you’re waiting on something but when you finally get that call its just a moment of is this really happening so it took me a minute; my husband it caught on to him quicker than it did me but honestly I just took a pause and was trying to soak it all in”

On December 11, Small took her seat in the Senate for the very first time and seconded the Migrants Smuggling Bill.

“Taking my space and not just taking my space but seconding that bill I think it showed that I was ready; sometimes more ready than you even know and so in that moment I accepted that God has been preparing me this whole time and so I soaked it in then; I tried my best to soak it in but I also think that I wanted to ensure that at every turn in the last two weeks that I represented those who have been pushing me”

I also asked her directly whether she will be running in the upcoming general elections.

“So the country is well aware when we had the by-election I was an aspirant candidate for the golden isles constituency and I was not successful however ive submitted myself and presented myself to the party that is not new information; I am willing to be a candidate in 2026 however wherever my party needs me to serve and sees I am best fit I am willing to do so”

But for now small says she’s focused on her seat in the Senate and will use that to promote several initiatives she believes in, including raising more awareness around mental health.
