USA – The price of eggs in the United States had gone up 138 percent from the year before, and now Farm Action, a U.S. based NGO, is calling on the Federal Trade Commission to “dig in” to ensure consumers are not victims of price gouging.

The US Department of Agriculture has pointed to the record numbers of avian flu as part of the reason for climbing prices, and the American Egg Board has commented that a variety of factors have contributed to the rise.

One company, said to control 20 percent of the American retail egg market, reported gross profits are up more than 600 percent than the same period the year before, and said the avian flu outbreak was causing the prices to rise. So far, it’s said that company has had no confirmed cases of avian flu on any of their farms.

And Farm Action is urging the FTC to also examine the extremely high profits at top egg companies.

So far, the FTC has declined to comment.
