NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Debate got underway in Parliament Wednesday morning, as the Davis administration moves to advance the Older Persons Rights Protection And Care Contribution Bill.

The proposed legislation seeks to protect the rights and dignity of older persons, while providing greater protection against abuse and neglect.

It also outlines family responsibilities and seeks to promote social support and community-based care for older persons.

Moving the bill in the House was Minister of State for Social Services, Bacchus Rolle.

“This bill stands beside you. It gives you a framework of support.”

Seconding the bill was Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville.

He says the legislation could help address a longstanding issue that has placed added strain on the country’s health care system.

“Our healthcare and social services professionals know the difficult reality of older persons who have been medically discharged but remain in hospital because no appropriate arrangements have been made for them, sometimes even where family members are known and are capable of assisting them but choose not to do so.”

And while Opposition Member of Parliament for Killarney, Michaela Barnett-Ellis, says she supports the purpose of the bill, she told the House she’s disappointed there were no changes.

“No amendments. The same document. I know persons sent in comments, I know stakeholders sent in comments, I know law firms sent in comments, yet not a single one of them was incorporated into the draft.”
