GAMBIA – A one-month-old baby girl has died in The Gambia after suspected female genital mutilation (FGM), sparking nationwide outrage.

Police say she was rushed to a Banjul hospital with severe bleeding but was pronounced dead on arrival.

FGM has been illegal in The Gambia since 2015, yet 73% of women aged 15 to 49 have undergone the practice. Two women have been arrested.

Women in Leadership and Liberation called the death “violence, pure and simple,” while MP Abdoulie Ceesay urged renewed commitment to protecting children’s rights.
