Overwhelming No to Select Committee on Immigration
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The push for a select committee on immigration failed in Parliament Monday evening, as the country continues to face challenges.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The push for a select committee on immigration failed in Parliament Monday evening, as the country continues to face challenges. Prime Minister Philip Davis says it’s time for action, not select committees.
The Official Opposition’s quest to form a select committee on immigration was overwhelmingly shot down after parliamentarians voted against the move.
Before the vote, Prime Minister Davis said now is the time for action.
The results of the vote showed 22 nays, five yays, and 10 MPs, including the prime minister and former Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis were absent.
The prime minister suggests the formation of the select committee wouldn’t be the best use of parliamentary time.
While multiple government ministers spoke on the years-long issues, none clearly stated their position on if they supported the motion.
The debate followed a national address by the prime minister where he outlined the country’s position on immigration.
The prime minister also calling for collaboration to find solutions.
