NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Official Opposition pushing for the formation of a select committee to address the country’s ongoing immigration challenge.

Opposition Leader Michael Pintard says failure to seize this moment could result in deeper consequences that could damage the quality of life throughout the country.

Pintard says the Opposition believes there remains a small window of opportunity to address the vexing issue immigration issue. He outlined the critical items the select committee should examine.

The Bahamas has long grappled with illegal immigration. Over the years, Bahamians were forced to deal with the growth of shantytowns and the growing number of migrants coming to Bahamian shores.

Last month, 400 Haitian nationals were apprehended in Bahamian waters, as that country faces political and economic hardship.

Pintard says immigration must be well managed and policies must be evidence-based.

The Free National Movement leader says doing more of the same will not work, adding there is also no room for discrimination.
