PERU – Peru’s congress is set to consider holding early elections, amid deadly nationwide unrest since lawmakers ousted President Pedro Castillo.

It’s the second time in days that lawmakers were expected to take up the proposal to move forward the 2026 presidential and congressional elections to next year.

The first early elections proposal failed to muster enough votes last week after leftist lawmakers abstained, conditioning their support on the promise of a constitutional overhaul.
