NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It’s a busy weekend in Antigua and Barbuda as delegations, officials and international media arriving for the most important meeting of the Commonwealth, the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
As the Our News team arrived at the V.C. Bird International Airport Saturday afternoon, meeting organizers were on the ground welcoming incoming delegations.
The four-day meeting, through November 4th, brings together heads of government, ministers and delegates from 56 Commonwealth member countries.
The theme is “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment For a Prosperous Commonwealth”.
The discussions include climate resilience, trade, sustainable development, innovation and creating greater economic opportunities for members.
It’s also an opportunity for small island nations like The Bahamas to strengthen relationships, advance shared interests and have their voices heard on the international stage.
By 6PM Saturday, Prime Minister Philip Davis and his delegation were touching down at a private jet terminal.
As daylight gave way to night, the prime minister and his wife Ann Marie Davis, along with a delegation including Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell and Minister of Economic Affairs Jerome FitzGerald were on the move.
The prime minister confirms an active role in the meeting, saying The Bahamas must be engaged on issues and interests shaping the world, to make sure our positions are clear.
Davis’ spouse is also taking an active role as well, participating in the Commonwealth Women’s Forum.
However, The Bahamas’ contribution in Antigua & Barbuda extends beyond the meeting rooms, as some 40 members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force are deployed in the country to assist with high-level security support.
The prime minister met with some of the Bahamian officers on arrival, happy to support.
