PM Denies PLP Ties to Man Slain in Abaco After Campaign Photo Goes Viral

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Prime Minister Philip Davis was on the defense Wednesday, shutting down questions about the PLP’s alleged ties to murdered Abaco victim, Warren “Spy” Ellis.

“I don’t respond to allegations. I have no personal relationship with Warren Ellis or, or Spy.”

Ellis, who’s had multiple run-ins with the law over the years, was gunned down in a brazen daylight attack in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, on Monday.

His killing has since put renewed attention on a photograph with North Abaco MP, Kirk Cornish, during the recent election campaign.

Both men are seen wearing PLP shirts.

The image has been making the rounds on social media, raising questions about what association, if any, Ellis may have had with Cornish or the governing party.

However, when pressed on whether the image could at least create that perception, Davis pushed back.

“ Because of your own thinking in your own mind….first of all, these questions of presence and association, as we look at what our system is about, understanding our system will give you the answer as to why politicians may be photographed with others who you might not believe they should be photographed with.”

Davis also insisted that being seen with a politician does not automatically mean there is a closer relationship.

He pointed to the nature of representative government, saying elected officials are expected to meet, listen to, and advocate for the people they represent.

According to Davis, that can sometimes include taking a picture.

“ We have what is called the Westminster system. It is a representative government. I’m elected by persons who expect me to represent them. So if a member of my [constituency], whoever he or she may be, comes to me for representation or to make, to advocate on their behalf, I’m obliged to speak and hear them.”

Davis also maintains the photograph should not be taken as proof that Ellis had a relationship with Cornish, the PLP, or his administration.

“ If they take a picture with me, what is wrong with a picture? Yes, we say a picture speaks a thousand words. But why would you want to make something out of nothing?”
