GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – The Ministry of Education has since released a statement noting that officials are working closely with law enforcement to ensure a full investigation is conducted, and that appropriate legal consequences are pursued.

The statement also highlights that, since the reintroduction of the School Resource Officer Programme, a collaborative effort between the police force and other safety stakeholders, the number of incidents has declined. In addition, the Ministry is actively reviewing policies regarding access by members of the public to school grounds.

Meanwhile, the Bahamas Educators Managerial Union, BEMU, is also weighing in, offering its full support to Principal Simone Butler of McLean’s Town Primary School.

The union’s statement reads, quote, “The matter of security and safety of members, whom most are females, working on these sites early and late hours, remains a challenge. BEMU demands that the employer fulfills its duty, as in law, to Sis. Butler and ensures that this matter is pursued to the fullest extent of the law.” End quote.

It further states that BEMU members will not continue to work in what has surely become unsafe working environments. The union clarifies that this is not a reactive stance, but rather a long-standing concern it has raised for some time.

BEMU is also pleading with parents and members of the public to engage with school administrators through respectful and lawful means, or face the full force of the law.
