NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Partnering with the Neigborhood Watch on their fifth anniversary, the police and fire divisions gave out eight smoke detectors to Quakoo Street residents Monday morning.

Smoke detectors are a small but life-saving devices that should be part of every home.

According to the National Fire Protection Association in the United States, homes without working smoke alarms saw a death rate more than twice as high as homes with working alarms.

But even with these strong statistics, the fact of the matter is, not everyone can afford them.

Officer in charge of Neighborhood and Urban Renewal is Superintendent Darvey Pratt.

Anthony Miller is a double amputee and says knowing there will be a smoke detector in his home is reassuring.

Susan Roker says the device is something missing in a lot of homes in her area, but says she feels safer with her family now that it has been installed.
