NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Many activists across the Caribbean wasting no time after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, saying now is the time for some Commonwealth nations to reconsider having the British monarch as their head of state. The prime minister as well as former prime ministers shared their thoughts on the future of the monarchy in The Bahamas.

Queen Elizabeth II’s death marking the end of an era yesterday, as the longest reign in British history came to a close.

And, for many nation’s across the region, the ascension of a new monarch reinvigorating the conversation about the removal of a ceremonial head.

Prime Minister Philip Davis sharing his thoughts on the new monarch, King Charles III, saying, “He has been a true activist.” Despite, Prime Minister Philip Davis, also says, he cannot cross out a referendum to become a republic.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting earlier this year, then Prince Charles gave his blessing to countries seeking to sever ties with the monarchy.

Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, the Free National Movement, Michael Pintard weighs in, saying that many Bahamians are interested in transitioning to a republic.

Social Services Minister Obie Wilchcombe says as the country approaches it’s 50th Independence anniversary, he feels the nation has matured enough to stand on its own-

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham said he had no comment on the matter.
