NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As we edge closer to the return of Junkanoo parades, the leader of one major Junkanoo group says it’s been a long time coming.

The sights and sounds of Junkanoo will bring Downtown Nassau alive once again. With just a few months before the 2022 Boxing Day Junkanoo parade, I spoke to leader of the Shell Saxon Superstars, Percy Vola Francis, who says after the two year break due to the global pandemic, anticipation for the next Junkanoo parade is high.

The Shell Saxons Superstars are the reigning champions of the 2019 Boxing Day and 2020 New Years Day Junkanoo parades, and while the leader remained tightlipped on what to expect from the group this year, he says they will be defending their crown.

Now, Junkanoo groups across New Providence recently received seed funding from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. However, Francis says this delay won’t affect their preparations.

JCNP officials say this year’s parade will be in memory of those fallen Junkanooers over the past two years.
