Remembering Veteran Journalist Ed Bethel

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Veteran broadcaster turned diplomat Ed Bethel remembered, Wednesday, the floor of the House of Assembly, as parliamentarians remembered him as a trusted voice, an iconic broadcaster and statesman.

Former ZNS news director, now Minister of Social Services Obie Wilchcombe worked side by side with Ed Bethel for many years.

At the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas, he said played a major role in the development of the national station.

Bethel started his career as a sports reporter at The Tribune, moving into radio and eventually television at the BCB, earning his place as an icon in Bahamian media for his style and thorough reporting.

Wilchcombe is among the many journalists he mentored.

His passing means the loss of another treasure trove of history.

Adding the chorus of praise was Education Minister Glenys Hanna Martin.

While the majority of his career was spent at ZNS… Bethel eventually moved to private broadcasting at Love 97.

The later part of his life was spent as Counsel General and High Commissioner.

Bethel died at age 82.
