NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Doing away with protocols requiring Bahamians possess a United States visa or police record to travel to the U.S. would be risky, according to U.S. Charge d’Affaires Usha Pitts.

Days after Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell said he believes Bahamians should not need visas to enter the U.S., Pitts is weighing in.

Mitchell’s latest comments came on Monday as he was speaking at the opening of a passport office in Cat Island.

Currently, Bahamians traveling to the U.S. must have either a valid police record or U.S. visa.

Pitts says only Bahamians and Canadians can travel to the U.S. on police records. However, a Bahamian traveling to the U.S. from another country needs a visa to enter.
