“It’s not ethical, it’s not right, and it’s not acceptable.”

For residents in Eleuthera, the simple routine of coming home and completing daily tasks has been thrown into uncertainty.

When the power goes out, it’s not just the lights that go dark. Entire households are left trying to make do without the comforts and necessities many take for granted.

The frustration comes after a string of outages disrupted power at homes and businesses across the island.

Bahamas Power and Light says the problems stemmed from a series of mechanical and electrical failures at the Hatchet Bay Power Station.

During the most recent outages between October 5 and 12, parts of a main generating engine were damaged, while a faulty wire caused the engine to shut down unexpectedly.

Problems with rental generators added to the strain, further complicating efforts to keep electricity flowing.

BPL says those faults have now been addressed, but for residents, the damage to public confidence may take longer to repair.

“I would think most people are in a state of kind of anger and distrust, yeah. I mean, because they don’t know what to believe anymore.”

McKinney acknowledges that there have been signs of improvement.

“Yes, yes, it has gotten better. I mean, somebody wrote in the chat the other day, ‘24 hours and no power outage.’”
