NASAU, BAHAMAS – Teacher shortages continue to affect public schools, even as the Ministry of Education says it has re-engaged retired teachers to help fill the gaps while permanent hires move through the system.

The Ministry of Education says it has re-engaged 20 retired teachers this year as part of its effort to reduce classroom disruptions caused by staffing shortages.

Director of Education Dominique McCartney-Russell says the retired teachers are being used strategically, particularly in areas where shortages are most acute.

She explains that while some teachers may be available, they may not always match the immediate needs of the system. Current shortages include language arts, mathematics, physical education, and performing arts.

McCartney-Russell acknowledges the frustration felt by new teachers awaiting appointment but notes that the hiring process involves multiple layers, including credential verification, background vetting, financial clearance, and public service approvals before appointment letters can be issued.

She says while the process can be lengthy, these steps are necessary to ensure the integrity of the education system.

Meanwhile, Bahamas Union of Teachers President Belinda Wilson says the union supports the re-engagement of retired teachers as a temporary measure but continues to advocate for newly trained educators.

Wilson says priority should be given to graduates of the University of The Bahamas, especially those who received government scholarships or grants. She adds that most teachers who had been waiting since last year have now been posted, leaving only a few still awaiting first-time appointment or reinstatement.
