NASSAU, BAHAMAS – September 11, 2001 seemed like an ordinary day for 19-year-old university student, Chris Leonard when he boarded his flight home from London to Miami.

Little did he know, the detour was due to a terrorist attack, an event we know today as 9 -11.

Terrorists linked to the Islamic extremist group Al Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States.

Two of the planes were flown into the world trade center in New York City, and a third plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C.

The tragic event led to the disruption of all commercial flights to and from America, and all civil aircraft were ordered to land at the nearest airport as soon as possible.

Almost 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, including the 19 Al Qaeda terrorists.

Leonard says the news brought a feeling of heaviness and uncertainty.
