SAN SALVADOR, BAHAMAS -Residents given the all clear in San Salvador after their community was spared the brunt of Tropical Storm Imelda.

The slow-moving system passed over the island over the weekend as a tropical depression before becoming a named storm.

Residents from as early as Friday were filling up their gas tanks and getting last-minute supplies from the grocery store.

Saturday,  heavy rainfall rolling in from the east, making visibility difficult along the roads.

Waves crashed along the dock and barrier wall, and for a while things got quiet until another round of rain rolled in.

On Sunday, it was much of the same with heavier gusts of wind. By this morning there were light showers off and on and the daily Bahamasair flight to the island delayed as a result of the weather in New Providence.

One resident said he’s grateful things weren’t any worse.

Hurricane Joaquin was a powerful category 4 storm whose strong winds and storm surge devastated Crooked Island, Acklins, Long Island, Rum Cay, and San Salvador.

Joaquin took the lives of 34 people including the 33 crew members of the cargo ship el Faro, which sunk during the storm northeast of Crooked Island.

A storeowner says she’s grateful they were not seriously impacted.
