Searing Heat Blamed for Poultry Shotage in Trinidad

TRINIDAD – Consumers in Trinidad are currently experiencing a shortage of chicken at some retail outlets, as local production has declined by 20 percent due to searing heat.

Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Ravi Ratiram says relief is expected in the coming weeks, with an increase in chicken supplies set to enter the production pipeline within the next two weeks.

The Ministry of Agriculture is monitoring the shortage, attributing it to exceptionally hot weather rather than a basic lack of production capacity.

While chicken is still available in the market, some consumers may have difficulty obtaining their usual amounts at certain supermarkets and retail outlets.

Poultry farmers have reported reduced numbers of birds being placed on farms in response to the extreme heat.

Ratiram explained that this temporary reduction is a prudent measure to ensure bird welfare, maintain healthy growth and minimize heat-related losses.

He warned that farmers who maintain normal stocking levels during such extreme weather conditions may face increased mortality and reduced production.
