NASSAU, BAHAMAS – For the first time in Bahamian history, the Royal Bahamas Police Force officially now has its first female commissioner in the person of Shanta Knowles.

We can now call her Commissioner Shanta Knowles.

Receiving her official instruments of office, Knowles became the 10th commissioner of  police in an independent Bahamas.

With 34 years of service under her belt, she’s risen up several ranks within the force.

But knowles says her journey started with humble beginnings.

Knowles takes the reigns  of the force at a critical time, when the force has been rocked with controversy and claims of corruption after a senior officer and others were implicated in a drug smuggling ring that was revealed by a shocking U.S. indictment.

The new top cop pledged to help repair the image of the police force.

The new commissioner also giving a glimpse of what’s top on the agenda under her new leadership.

Also speaking at Friday’s ceremony was outgoing commissioner Clayton Fernander. He says he’s leaving the post with his head held high.
