Shroud Wins Goombay Punch Cup at Long Island Regatta

LONG ISLAND, BAHAMAS – The Long Island Regatta wrapped up on Saturday, but before it did, the sailors competed in the Class II races.

Running Tide took the Class A Harbour Breeze Cup with New Legend coming second and Capt. Gene in third.

Ole Boy took the Class B Kalik Cup with Susan Chase V and Lonesome Dove coming 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Shroud took the Class C Sands Cup with Sassie Sue coming 2nd and Xena coming 3rd.

Lady Kayla won the Class E Laurin Knowles Memorial Cup, Lady Annmarie came 2nd and Early Bird came third.

Muriel’s Garden took the Series III Class G, Sevendees came 2nd and Blue Magic came third.

In addition to the races, Shroud won the Goombay Punch Cup, a gran prix style trophy given to the boat crew from a designated division with the most points accumulated across the best of the best, National Family Island and Long Island Regattas.

With the cup, Caribbean Bottling Company awarded $5000 to Shroud’s crew and $8000 to the junior program in Shroud’s island of origin – New Providence.

Team 242 lost 8-0 to Costa Rica Saturday night at Wildey Turf in Christ Church, Barbados.

Team Bahamas held the line early on, not allowing a goal until 20 minutes in when Alonzo Martinez broke the stalemate. Costa Rica’s Joseph Mora and Alejandro Bran added a couple more before to make the game three-nothing.

Things would get out of hand for the Junkanoo Boyz in the second half when five different players scored goals to give the game its final score.

Team Bahamas was overwhelmed, allowing one shot on-goal while giving up 19.
