Standout Prospect La’Breah Sands Headed to Duke

UNITED STATES – Bahamian softball standout La’Breah Sands has made her college decision, committing to Duke University after taking official visits to Duke, Indiana, Liberty and Florida International University.

Sands, a 2028 prospect who pitches and plays first base, says Duke stood out not just for softball, but for the future she wants to build off the field.

She said Duke checked every box for her academically and athletically, adding that she wants to play softball while pursuing her dream of a career in law.

The 5′ 10″ standout has built an impressive résumé, including an MVP performance to lead Grand Bahama to a gold medal at the 6th Bahamas Games when she was just 13-years-old.

Sands has also earned all-tournament honors in four of the six AGL events she has played, participated in the ESPN 16-and-Under All-American Games and helped Bartow High School win a state title.

This summer, she posted a 2.13 ERA against high-level competition while batting just under .400, and has been clocked throwing as fast as 71 miles per hour.

Off the field, Sands carries a 4.1 GPA and has earned National Honor Society accolades, and was selected for the triple crown 16-and-Under Future Stars game.

Sands will now take her talents to Durham, North Carolina, where she’ll continue developing as a two-way softball player while preparing for the next chapter of her academic career.

Murray Makes Impactful Return to Close AAA Season

BJ Murray Jr. closed out his 2026 season with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in impressive fashion, including a grand slam and four more hits over the final two games.

Murray was optioned back to Iowa by the Chicago Cubs on September 18, just over two weeks after making his major league debut and recording his first MLB hit.

He immediately made his presence felt back in Triple-A, going one-for-three with a walk and a run scored in Iowa’s two-one win over Omaha.

Then, in the second game of that doubleheader, Murray connected for a sixth-inning grand slam, his 17th home run of the season, as the Cubs rolled to a 10-2 win.

On Saturday, Murray followed it up with another multi-hit performance, going two-for-five with two RBI’s in a six-four win over Omaha.

Then, in Sunday’s season finale, Murray went 2-3 with two walks, despite Iowa falling to Omaha 14-3.

The Iowa Cubs finished the season 63-82, while Murray finished his return to Triple-A with a grand slam, six RBI’s and four hits in his final three games.

Jones, Liberty Rout Toronto as Playoff Race Tightens

Jonquel Jones and the New York Liberty are down to their final two games of the regular season after cruising past the Toronto Tempo 106-69 on Sunday.

Jones played 20 minutes and finished with 11 points, three rebounds, one assist and two blocks, shooting four-of-seven from the field and two-of-four from three-point range.

The win moved New York to 26-16 and kept the Liberty in the middle of a tight playoff-seeding race.

The Liberty currently sit sixth in the overall standings, with Dallas and Washington also at 26-16, while Atlanta is fourth at 28-14 and Indiana is fifth at 27-15.

New York can finish as high as fourth, which would provide home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, but they could also slip as low as eighth depending on the results of the final games around the league.

Then, the Liberty’s final two games will come against the team currently sitting fourth, the Atlanta Dream, with the teams meeting Monday night and again Wednesday night at Barclays Center.

The Liberty enter the final two games having won three straight, including a 93-81 road win over the league-leading Minnesota Lynx on Friday.
