NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As temperatures heat up, it’s become the norm across the country as blackouts plunge many communities into darkness, frustrating residents.

However, residents in the Stapledon community say perhaps they’ve had it worse than others, telling us power outages could last up to 24 hours at times.

Their association president, Glenville Johnson, says his neighbors and friends have had enough.

“I have have to think about all the residents who are writing they are suffering, the person who rely on life equipment when the power goes off…”

We also spoke with Charae Miller, who’s son is a University of The Bahamas student.

Vital to his studies is a consistent power, but she says that hasn’t happened.

“When he is home during the day, you know he has to do his assignment. Sometimes classes are online and you know then the power is disconnected. What is he supposed to do? That is very frustrating. [It is] very upsetting and it’s it’s something that’s occurring almost every day or every other day and we just need to know some type of resolve.”

However, it’s not only residents in Stapledon that are feeling frustrated.

Across the highway in Millennium Gardens, residents are dealing with the same issue.

Their president, Tamara Clarke, claims residents have had appliances destroyed because of the constant outages.

“We’ve had persons who have had TV blown, fridge blown, you know generator switch blown, but just to think about filling out a form trying to get that into BPL and you know get reimbursed…”

However, it’s not just homeowners who’re fed up, businesses are also impacted.

Dion Cleare – Resident, Stapledon Gardens

“Especially throughout the day when she’s hard at work, either creating products and things of that nature…power goes off for the order that she may have already received payment for, now the order is delayed or sometimes it has to be canceled.”
