UNITED STATES – A new statue of Christopher Columbus has been installed on the grounds of the White House as Donald Trump pushes to restore monuments removed during the 2020 racial justice protests.

The 13-foot statue placed outside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, is a replica of one toppled in Baltimore during demonstrations following the killing of George Floyd.

The White House says the installation honors Columbus’ legacy as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, while supporters call the monument a symbol of pride for Italian-American communities.

Critics, however, continue to view Columbus as a controversial figure, citing his role in European colonization and the treatment of indigenous people.

The move comes as the Trump administration also advances plans to reinstall other removed monuments, including Confederate-era statues across the nation’s capital.
