JAPAN – A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake rocked northeast japan late Monday, triggering tsunami warnings and urgent evacuations.

The quake struck off the coast of Aomori around 11:15 pm, with waves up to fifty centimetres already hitting ports in Hokkaido and Aomori.

The epi-centre was about 80 kilometres offshore at a depth of 50 kilometres.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says waves could reach up to 3 metres along parts of the northeast coast.

The prime minister Sanae Takaiichi says a government response team is now assessing damage and supporting evacuations.
