NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Tarrus Riley and myself, just hours before his debut performance on Jon Batiste’s Jazz Club stage at Baha Mar on Wednesday evening.

The performance marked the commencement of the artist’s three-night residency.

Initially, event organizers had scheduled Riley for two nights. However, they say a decision was made to add an additional show after tickets sold out within 24 hours.

Later that evening, Riley hit the stage with a small ensemble featuring legendary Jamaican saxophonist Dean Fraser.

As Riley charmed the audience with his signature melodies, the crowd fed off his mesmerising stage presence.

Spectators positioned near the stage’s edge transformed it into a drum, rhythmically striking its surface with their hands while singing along to every note Riley delivered.

The sounds of the crowd echoed throughout the venue, elevating the intimate performance.

“It’s up close and personal, and that’s my favourite kind of concert. We can just be one-on-one, so I love that.”

By observing fans, we noticed one key element: the room was packed with baby boomers, millennials and Gen Z, proof of the generational impact of Riley’s music.

“Music is timeless, you know. Music don’t have any age. Even me, a lot of the songs, we weren’t around when they were coming out, but we grow and come love them. So music is supposed to stand the test of time.”
