CANADA –  The University of Toronto has announced that New Providence-born University of Toronto Baseball player Owen Taylor has been nominated for the University’s George M. Biggs Trophy.

According to the University’s website, the award is “given annually to the graduating undergraduate men’s student-athlete who has contributed most to university athletics from the standpoint of academics, athletics, leadership, and community service.”

Taylor turned Toronto’s baseball team into a powerhouse during his tenure, leading the  Varsity Blues to three provincial titles in his four years on campus, including back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024. He got the go-ahead RBI and the game-clinching save in the championship game in 2023. He was so feared by the end of his career that in this past championship, he was walked an astounding six times.

Taylor has been honored many times for his outstanding exploits on the field and in the classroom, being named an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference All-Star and MVP each of his last two seasons. He was also given the Frank Pindar award, given to the university’s top athlete in 2024.

Taylor was also active off the field in student life, serving on the varsity board as Co-President in 2023-24 and as director of corporate relations for the Blues in Commerce student club. He is set to graduate this year.

The award winner will be named at the Varsity Blues Awards Gala on Friday, April 4th.
