NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Tipoff is less than 24 hours away in an important Americup qualifier for Team Bahamas, and its first under Head Coach John Lucas III.
The former NBA player and coaching vet joins Team Bahamas for the first time and will also make his FIBA coaching debut.
Team Bahamas has just nine players on the roster, but the available players – ranging from seasoned vets to first year pros – remain optimistic about their prospects.
High School Softball
The BAISS softball championships came to an end in celebration for the queen’s college comets.
The Comets won both the senior girls and junior girls titles in a pair of game twos Wednesday night at the Freedom Farm Baseball Complex.
The junior girls were up first, and they pulled off the upset over the pennant winning Big Red Machine, who went through the regular season with an undefeated record.
The Comets peaked at the right time to take game two 17-15 and the best of three series.
In senior girls play, the Comets broke a 7-7 tie in the fifth inning to hold on for the series over the Big Red Machine for the sweep and their second consecutive title.
Boxing
Last weekend, the world was fixated on the sports entertainment version of boxing but now The Bahamas gets to see the real thing this weekend.
Bahamas events and sports will host the courtyard brawl at Fusion Superplex, featuring 12 bouts on the card.
The unique format will feature boxers from the “red” team – managed by Meacher ‘Major Pain’ Major, against fighters from the “blue” team – managed by Jermaine ‘Choo Choo’ Mackey.
In the lone women’s bout on the card will be the red team’s aimee newchurch will take on blue’s Franissa Russell.
Other matches include Alfred Kemp Jr versus Kendrick Stuart, Lloyd Green versus Carlos Brown, Leslie Ambrister versus Jerrio Munroe, Justin Symonette versus Teron Pennerman, and finally, Jwan Forbes against Jermaine Allen.
The 12 boxers train out of the yellow elder gardens boxing club under Valentino Knowles, the strikers boxing club under Ronn Rodgers and finally beachfront boxing and MMA under Johnny Hernandez.
Bahamas Bowl Update
In your Bahamas Bowl update for week 13, we add a few more teams to the list of bowl eligible programs.
In the mac, buffalo – your 2019 Bahamas Bowl winners, became bowl eligible with a thrilling 51-48 overtime win over ball state.
Ohio Bobcats quarterback Parker Navarro threw for 277 yards, rushed for 106 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 35-10 win over Eastern Michigan.
In Conference USA, Louisiana tech kept its bowl hopes alive with a 12-7 win at Western Kentucky. The Bulldogs have never played in the Bahamas Bowl.
Jacksonville state running back Tre Stewart had 22 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-31 win over FIU.
