The Team Credits Coach Antoan Richardson for Success on the Bases

The New York Mets are the best base-running team in the Major Leagues, stealing bases at a league-leading 89.4 percent success rate, the highest in the league this season and the highest in franchise history.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza attributes his team’s opportunistic base running to First Base coach, New Providence native, Antoan Richardson, saying,

“Got to give credit to [first base coach] Antoan Richardson with his preparation, and then credit to the players. They are buying in and executing the game plan. We’re not trying any harder, the situation presents itself and we’re going to take advantage.”

The Mets haven’t gotten caught stealing bases in July, and on Saturday, they stole their 26th consecutive base when superstar outfielder Juan Soto stole his 14th of the season to help the Mets squeak by Richardson’s former team, the San Francisco Giants, 2-1.

Despite the team’s effusive praise for Richardson’s coaching, the team has been mum on the details of what Richardson is doing with their players to turn them into an effective base-stealing machine. But Richardson’s coaching has translated to real-world results. The Mets have amassed a National League East-leading 62-44 record.

The Mets will try to extend their streak tonight against the San Diego Padres.
