NASSAU , BAHAMAS – A ten-year-old primary school student with a disability received a new wheelchair.

With schoolmates cheering her on, she turned and wheeled her way around in the new motorised chair.

As her mother told Our Joshua Williams, the donation will not only make life easier for her daughter but also give her hope that one day, she will walk.

It was an emotional scene Tuesday morning at Columbus Primary School as fifth-grader Naveah Strachan received a brand-new wheelchair, making it easier for her to navigate the school campus.

The donation was made by the Bahamas Educators Managerial Union.

The happiness was evident on Naveah’s face as she and her mother, Ana Thompson, broke down in tears.

Thompson tells us her daughter suffers from a rare disease that makes moving around much more difficult.

“She has [disease name]. She has soft bones. She picked that up from her father.”

“I just lift her in the morning for school, and I lift her back. The teacher pushes the wheelchair.”

It is a fully motorised wheelchair, giving Naveah the freedom to move around on her own by simply controlling a joystick, much to her delight.

Columbus Primary guidance counsellor Mr. Cash also uses a similar wheelchair.

“When I first saw it, I was so overwhelmed. I was so happy because I know a person in a similar situation like me. This wheelchair has been a blessing to me, and I know she has been through a lot. Being gifted with a wheelchair like this is such a blessing, so I was just overjoyed and happy for her.”

And for her mother, it is all about encouraging Naveah every day.

“As she grows older and older, she always used to say, ‘Lord, I wish I could walk.’ I just encourage her: God is going to allow you to walk one day. It never fazed me. I just used to lift her. I never take her for granted, and I appreciate her. This is my miracle baby.”
