TikTok Rejects End-To-End Encryption, Citing User Safety Concerns

WORLD WIDE WEB – TikTok said Wednesday it will not implement end-to-end encryption for direct messages, saying the feature could make it harder to protect users.

End-to-end encryption, known as e-two-e-e, allows only the sender and the recipient to read message content.

Competing platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Messenger have adopted the technology to strengthen user privacy.

But TikTok officials say full encryption would limit the company’s ability and that of law enforcement, to detect and investigate harmful or illegal content shared in private messages.

The announcement comes amid ongoing international scrutiny of TikTok, including concerns in the United States and other countries about data security and the app’s links to China.

TikTok says its current approach is designed to protect users, particularly younger audiences, while continuing to moderate content on the platform.
