1828: Thomas Browne Wylly Becomes Speaker of the House of Assembly
On this day in 1828, Thomas Browne Wylly became Speaker of the House of Assembly. The son of Loyalist William Wylly, who moved to the Bahamas after the American Revolution, Thomas served as Speaker until May 31, 1831.

1936: Edward VIII Abdicates the British Throne
In 1936, Edward VIII, who later became Governor of the Bahamas, abdicated the British throne. He is the only British monarch to voluntarily give up the crown.

1967: Sidney Poitier Becomes Godfather to Monique Pindling
On December 10th, 1967, Sidney Poitier, the first Black male actor to win an Academy Award, became godfather to the youngest child of Premier Lynden Pindling, Monique Pindling. Poitier was also one of the most famous figures in the Bahamas at the time.
