NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history: African National Congress President Nelson Mandela began a week-long visit to The Bahamas.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history: African National Congress President Nelson Mandela began a week-long visit to The Bahamas.
Mandela was the South Africa Political activist who was jailed for 27 years and was released in 1990.
In 1994 he became South Africa’s first democratically elected President.
While in The Bahamas, Mandela visited the College of The Bahamas, Coral World, and Ardastra Gardens.
The beloved activist also attended the Boxing Day Junkanoo parade and met with a number of other community leaders.
Former Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis paid tribute to Mandela, during the opening session of The Commonwealth Youth Games at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in 2017.
The opening ceremony coincided with what would have been President Mandela’s 99th birthday. Mandela died on December 5, 2013, at the age of 95.
