NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, Life Magazine published an exposé on the hotel and casino operations in the colony in 1967.

The article focused on the corrupt practices of the former United Bahamian Party administration.

Then almost ten years later in 1974 a New York Times article detailed how businessman Howard R. Hughes, was apparently backed by Bahamian leaders was published.

The article reads: “The reclusive billionaire, appears to have made his peace with the governing political party in The Bahamas and will be permitted to live here while fighting his legal battles with the United States and various persons suing or investigating him, from there.”

In 2016, police announced a search was still ongoing for convicted murderer Ormand Leon, who escaped from a corrections bus just off East Bay Street the day before.

Police searched for two weeks before the 26-year-old was recaptured at a home in bushes on Fire Trail Road.

On February 17, 2016, Leon was sentenced to just over 41 years.
