NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, on September 21st, 1783 – the first contingent of American Loyalists left New York for Abaco. The group was made up of refugees from North and South Carolina, Georgia, East Florida and New York.

Upon their arrival in Abaco, they laid out a town calling it Carleton after Sir Guy Carleton, the British Commander-In-Chief in New York. The settlement was located in the area now known as Treasure Cay.

In 1981 – Muhammad Ali arrived in Nassau, Bahamas to begin training for his boxing match against Trevor Berbick on December 11th, 1981.

Fast forward to 2016 – The Bahamas Papers or Bahamas Leaks, a 38-gigabyte data leak, containing 1.3 million files was published.

The files contained the names of owners and directors of more than 175,000 companies, foundations and trusts registered in The Bahamas from 1990 to 2016.

And in 2018, then Finance Minister Peter Turnquest revealed it would cost $39 million to repair the grand Lucayan Hotel in Grand Bahama.

He made the comments in Parliament as the house approved a borrowing resolution of $35 million.
