PARIS, FRANCE – Two Portuguese triathletes, Vasco Vilaça and Melanie Santos, reportedly fell ill after swimming in the Seine river during the Paris 2024 olympics on August 5th.

Euro News reports both athletes developed gastrointestinal infections.

Belgium’s Claire Michel also fell ill and withdrew from the mixed relay event, contributing to a wave of sickness among competitors.

The Seine, traditionally too toxic for swimming, reportedly underwent a €1.4 billion renovation to address water quality concerns.
