NASSAU , BAHAMAS – The Ministry of Health and Wellness says impetigo was identified following consultation with education officials.

Samuel Guy Pinder Comprehensive School in Spanish Wells and Gambier Primary School were temporarily closed for cleaning and sanitation.

The Ministry of Education says both will remain closed until health officials advise that it is safe to resume normal operations.

Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection, particularly common among children.

It often starts as small red sores or blisters that can later crust over.

The infection can spread through close contact or by sharing items such as towels, bedding and clothing.

Parents are being advised to practise regular handwashing, keep affected areas clean and limit close contact if their child is experiencing symptoms.

Our News reached both education officials and the Bahamas Teachers Union for comment but was unsuccessful.

Health officials are also advising parents to seek medical attention if the infection worsens or does not improve after treatment begins.
