NASSAU, BAHAMAS – After a 15-year gap, The Bahamas has officially welcomed a new United States ambassador, marking a major diplomatic milestone as Ambassador-Designate Herschel Walker arrived in New Providence on Wednesday.

The former NFL star and prominent Republican political figure received a red-carpet welcome as he stepped off the plane with his wife and their golden retriever, Duke. Bahamian and U.S. officials greeted the new ambassador, signaling the start of his transition into a role that has been vacant since 2011.

Walker’s arrival follows his confirmation by the U.S. Senate on October 7 after being nominated by President Donald Trump. He succeeds Nicole Avant, who served as ambassador under the Obama administration from 2009 to 2011.

With Walker now in The Bahamas, Kimberly Furnish, who has served as U.S. Chargé d’Affaires since June 2024 under former President Joe Biden, will transition into the role of Deputy Chief of Mission.

During his nomination hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in September, Walker outlined several key priorities. He raised concerns about China’s growing influence in the region, pointing to major infrastructure investments, and highlighted rising drug-smuggling activity in Bahamian waters. He emphasized the need for strong cooperation between both governments to address these security threats.

Walker also committed to encouraging American investment in The Bahamas. He said he intends to advise U.S. businesses on trade and investment opportunities while ensuring the country remains a welcoming environment for economic partnerships. Strengthening ties with the Bahamian-American community in the United States was another focus he underscored.

Once Walker presents his credentials to Governor General Cynthia Pratt, he will officially assume office, closing the 14-year vacancy in the U.S. Embassy’s top post.
