UNITED STATES – Chinese state-sponsored hackers infiltrated U.S. Treasury department systems earlier this month, accessing employee workstations and some unclassified documents, officials say.

The treasury called it a “major incident” and is investigating with the FBI and other agencies.

China denied involvement, calling the accusations “baseless”.

The hack reportedly exploited a third-party service which has since been shut down.

The breach follows a string of high-profile cyberattacks attributed to China, including a telecom hack earlier this month.
