NEW YORK – The U.N. Security Council has extended an international security mission in Haiti for another year, but dropped plans to turn it into a U.N. peacekeeping mission due to opposition from Russia and China.

The U.S. supports Haiti’s call for peacekeepers, with U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield urging respect for Haiti’s request.

Haiti’s leaders say the peacekeeping mission is urgently needed to address gang violence, but China and Russia argue the current mission should be given more time.

Haiti’s ambassador insists a peacekeeping force would stabilize the country and enhance security efforts.
