BARBADOS – U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres announced in Barbados that he plans to ask the Security Council for U.N. funding to cover the costs of a multinational force in Haiti, currently struggling against violent gangs.

The force, led by 800 Kenyan police along with troops from Jamaica, Guatemala, and El Salvador, is working with Haiti’s national police to restore order.

Guterres said, “If the Security Council accepts, we can finally have an effective force to defeat the gangs and create conditions for democracy.”

He said salaries would be paid from an existing trust fund.

While critics warn of challenges ahead, the U.N. says it remains committed to supporting a political process that restores democratic institutions in Haiti.
