UNITED NATIONS – More than 122 million people worldwide are now forcibly displaced by war, violence, or persecution.

That’s nearly double the number from a decade ago, according to the UN Refugee Agency.

In its latest global trends report, the UNHC says Sudan now has the world’s largest displacement crisis, surpassing Syria.

Despite the grim stats, the agency noted some hope, as nearly 2 million Syrians have returned home in recent months.

Most displaced people stay in neighboring countries, which the UN says challenges the idea that many are heading to the U.S. or Europe.
