HAITI – UN spokesperson Marta Hurtado warns the human rights crisis in Haiti deepens, citing the most violent month in two years.

Gang violence has escalated, leaving over 800 civilians killed, injured, or kidnapped in January alone, according to UN reports.

The UN says children are suffering greatly, with 167 killed or injured by bullets in 2023.

Anti-government protests have erupted across 24 towns, leading to closures of schools and businesses as armed groups, including elements of the “protected areas security brigade”, to join the unrest.
