Urban Renewal Expands Community Outreach

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Urban Renewal has been around for 24 years, with officers working directly in communities to identify needs and connect residents with support.

Chief Superintendent Davie Pratt, Officer-in-Charge of Urban Renewal guided us through some of the ways his team is making a difference, which sometimes involve going beyond their policing duties.

“I had to pull my officers together and we had to assist a female in one of these communities, back to school, clothing, you name it. We have to do it all,” Pratt said.

Pratt also says the work is also about helping people turn the page, including assisting some residents with getting their records expunged and finding a path back into society.

“We continue to work with the ministries, working to see how best we can integrate them back into the community so that they can find some jobs.”

Now, the team is taking that outreach to another level.

Pratt says night time community walks were launched about 3 weeks ago, with officers continuing to build relationships and remind residents that they are there to help.

“This initiative, I believe, is important. It’s something that is needed in the community, and we will support as long as we need to in these communities,” he said.
