NASSAU, BAHAMAS – UTEB President Daniel Thompson says the university’s administration has acted without consultation or transparency. He’s calling for accountability.

Daniel Thompson – President, Union of Tertiary Educators of The Bahamas
“I have sat on interviews for vice presidents, presidents, et cetera. They are all interviewed. While they are not within the domain of our industrial relations, what the industrial relations does say is that the university will maintain goodwill, labor goodwill, relationships with the union. And this is not goodwill, because at the end of the day, they expect us to buy in to what the university does and represents.”

Thompson says the university recently announced that the vice president of human resources would also serve as the new vice president of the UB Northern Campus,
a decision he says lacks due process and professional balance.

Thompson adds that the position has historically been held by academics with a terminal degree, not human resource professionals.

He says faculty morale is at an all-time low, and that this latest move only deepens distrust.

“There are any number of academics within the institution. We have persons who have been presidents, have been principals of colleges and universities—right here at the University of The Bahamas.”

When asked what the next steps are for the union:

Daniel Thompson – President, Union of Tertiary Educators of The Bahamas
“We will continue to call it out. And when the university is repentant and decides to be professional in that regard, we will gladly stand in support of their actions.”
