NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As residents try to keep cool this summer, visiting beaches and pools will be the activities of choice for many but how can you stay safe when spending time around open water?

Pool parties and beach days will see hundreds of Bahamian families this summer, which means the possibilities of water accidents and even drowning may be higher than usual.

But, you can enjoy your summer while staying safe by practicing some simple steps and staying vigilant.

For starters, knowing how to swim is important when participating in any water activity.

Experts suggest that parents can introduce children to swimming lessons from as early as age one.

But, if you don’t know how to swim, wearing a life vest or some type of floatation device is recommended.

Head Learn-to-Swim Coach at Mako Aquatics Club, Amanda McPhee encourages parents to introduce their children to the do’s and dont’s around water.

But kids aren’t the only ones who should be practicing water safety this summer.

She says even if you’re an adult, you should never visit the beach alone, especially if you do not know how to swim.
