NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Prime Minister Philip Davis’ announcement that the next general election will be held on May 12th has signaled the official start of the 2026 campaign seasons.

Thousands of voters will head to the polls to decide whether to return the Progressive Liberal Party to office or choose between the Free National Movement or the Coalition of Independents.

Free National Movement Chairman Dr. Duane Sands told our Jasmin Brown, that the May date came as no surprise.

On Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Philip Davis, announced the country’s next general election will be held on Tuesday, May 12th.

The prime minister also revealed he’ll advise the governor general to dissolve parliament on Wednesday, and that the writ of election will be issued on Thursday.

Once the bell is rung and Parliament is dissolved, voters will no longer be able to register.

The announcement comes a week after the house was prorogued, ending the current legislative session.

What he does find surprising though, is what he terms a disastrous parliamentary registration process that’s left prospective voters waiting hours to register.

While residents rush to register before the house is dissolved next week, the FNM chairman said his party is ready to hit the campaign trail with the issues that matter.

With just over a month until the upcoming election… Political parties are expected to ramp up their campaigns across the country.
