NASSAU, BAHAMAS – CCTV footage, obtained exclusively by Our News, shows what appears to be a tornado sweeping across the parking lot of the Family Market food store. While the twister only lasted for moments, it left a trail of destruction that stretched for nearly half a mile. Fences blown down, damaged vehicles, and roofs left with gaping holes tell the story of what occurred around 4 p.m. yesterday.

Denekah Knowles – Resident
“It was raining and stuff, and I just hear ‘wooooo,’ you know, like this loud wind.”

The Family Market owner, Tanya Treco, says her customers had to run inside to seek shelter.

Tanya Treco – Owner, The Family Market
“When we looked up, we noticed that there was a funnel cloud coming, and that’s when I realized it was a tornado. And as soon as that happened, everybody ran inside, and we didn’t get a good visual of it because everyone was inside at the time. Upon further investigation, when I looked at the cameras, I realized that the tornado cut straight across.”

Tornado’s Impact on Local Residents

Anthony Turnquest lives right next door. He came home to discover a nuni tree uprooted in his yard. His elderly aunt was in the home when the tornado struck, tossing the tree just feet away from the house.

Anthony Turnquest – Resident
“There’s extensive training for disaster response mitigation procedures and protocols for all of our teams. For example, advanced teams, impact teams, disaster assistance, and response teams or DART for short, as well as hurricane shelter management teams.”

This resident tells me he had just redone his roof, but all of that work was literally blown away.

Carlyle – Resident
“The only thing ya hearing is a bunch of noise, bunch a rattling, you know what I mean, so my sister and my niece was home. So they was panicking, and I was like, there ain’t really nothing much you can do.”
